The engagement ring is a cultural thing. In a lot of countries the engagement ring is the wedding ring. On your wedding day you move it to the other hand. I have never seen a woman show of her “big rock” in my own country, Holland.

I like engagement rings as long as they remain simple. To have a ring simply to show off the “rock” is vain IMO.

Oooh. I can appreciate the historical reason! That tradition is still practiced in South Asian cultures where brides receive 22K gold from the groom and from the guests as wedding gifts. It’s like a savings account for the women, but considered more safe–safe from being stolen and safe from devalued.

In history, the engagement ring was a woman’s security in case the man ran off, leaving her alone and in debt. She could sell it and have a small fortune for living on. Today, its just a tradition that’s lingered on. As for why you aren’t interested in them, I can’t say. I don’t think it comes down to religion or anything else, but to the individual, to how materialistic you are.

Asalamu alaikum sisters,

I agree, isn’t one ring enough? I did not receive an engagement ring and my wedding ring was not an expensive one. My husband has offered to get me a new more expensive ring, but I don’t feel the need to get one. I also feel that far too much is spent on some weddings. Sure, it is the joining of two families and there should be some celebration, but I’m sure the new couple could use the money for so many more useful things such as a down payment on a home, furniture, etc….
